Flights, rooms and restaurant choices still need quotes for your dates and party. The worksheet below keeps those costs separate.

Keep shopping separate. A budget that mixes discretionary purchases with beds and transport cannot tell you whether the route itself is affordable.

Why one daily number misleads

Two travelers can follow the same route and spend different amounts because of four choices: travel dates, room type, city mix and intercity transport. A solo traveler pays the whole room. A pair splits it. A holiday weekend can change the same hotel's price, while a flexible rail ticket can cost more than an advance-restricted option.

Currency conversion adds another layer. The Korea Tourism Organization confirms that Korea uses the won and notes broad card acceptance while advising travelers to check individual merchants. Your bank may add a foreign transaction fee or use a different rate from the one displayed online.

Use daily figures to monitor spending after the fixed costs are known. Do not use them as a substitute for pricing the trip.

Price the fixed costs first

International flights

Compare the final checkout total with baggage and seat needs included. A low fare can lose its advantage after adding a checked bag or an inconvenient overnight connection.

Record:

• airports and terminals;
• baggage allowance;
• change and cancellation terms;
• arrival and departure times;
• ground transport created by those times.

An early departure may add an airport hotel. A late arrival may replace rail with a taxi. Count the full itinerary effect.

Accommodation

Search the exact dates and number of guests. Record the room total after taxes and fees, then divide it only if travelers will share that room.

Location changes transport and time costs. A room near a useful station can cost more but remove daily taxis or long transfers. Check the walking route with luggage, lift access and the last connection from ICN.

Compare like with like: private room against private room, same cancellation terms and the same occupancy. Do not place a dorm bed beside a hotel room and call the difference a city-wide range.

Intercity transport

List each route before comparing passes. A typical Seoul-Gyeongju-Busan-Seoul itinerary needs several long-distance tickets. Price those exact services through KORAIL or the relevant official bus and airline channels.

A rail pass helps only when its current price and conditions beat the tickets you would buy.

Estimate daily variable spending

Local transport

Build from rides, not a round-number allowance. Count the planned subway or bus trips and add taxis only where the itinerary needs them.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government's official subway page lists an adult base fare of KRW 1,550 by transit card, effective June 28, 2025 and rechecked September 10, 2026, with distance charges and transfer rules.

Food

Use real menus from the neighborhoods where you plan to stay. Make two lists:

• ordinary days with local breakfast, lunch and dinner choices;
• planned splurges such as tasting menus, barbecue, cafés or bars.

Group dishes can make a solo budget different from a pair's budget. Drinks, desserts and delivery fees can also sit outside the menu price you first notice. Include them if they match your habits.

Attractions and activities

List the sites you will enter, then check each official page. Many parks, streets and public spaces cost nothing. Museums, palaces, performances, theme parks and guided activities use different pricing structures.

Check closure days before counting a paid ticket. A non-refundable booking on the wrong itinerary day is a cost even if you never enter.

Match the budget to your travel style

Lean independent trip

Use dorms or shared guesthouse rooms, public transport and low-cost meals. Keep paid attractions selective. The largest risks are a private room booked late, a missed last service and luggage charges on the flight.

Private-room, mid-range trip

Use a well-located private room, public transport with some taxis and a mix of everyday meals and planned restaurant visits. Add reserved intercity rail and paid attractions. This style needs a room quote for the actual occupancy before any daily total has meaning.

Higher-comfort trip

Use full-service hotels, more taxis or private transfers, reserved activities and higher-cost dining. Price transfers and hotel taxes in full. "Luxury" has no stable ceiling, so set a personal cap for hotels, meals and transfers.

Use this equation with live quotes:

Trip total = flights
           + (9 hotel-night totals)
           + arrival and departure transfers
           + intercity tickets
           + (10 × daily food estimate)
           + (10 × local transport estimate)
           + attraction total
           + connectivity
           + contingency

For a pair sharing rooms, divide only shared lines such as room totals and joint taxis. Keep flights, rail seats, admissions and individual meals per person.

Costs travelers often miss

• The journey from the airport at the actual arrival hour
• Baggage storage before check-in or after check-out
• Laundry on a longer trip
• Seat reservations or baggage on a low-cost flight
• Taxis after the last public transport service
• Foreign card and ATM fees
• Roaming left active on the home SIM
• Weather-driven changes and non-refundable bookings

Check whether a quoted hotel total includes taxes. Keep a small cash balance for situations where your card or a top-up machine does not work, while following current customs and cash declaration rules.

How to reduce cost without weakening the trip

Reduce hotel moves

Each move can add storage, local transport and lost time. Use Seoul and Busan as bases and add Gyeongju only if its heritage sites justify the extra night for you.

Walk coherent areas

Group sights by neighborhood. This cuts fares and creates room for a weather change without abandoning a cross-city reservation.

Compare weekday and weekend rooms

Move the more expensive city stay to weekdays if the full route permits. Check attraction closure days before shifting dates.

Use official booking channels as the baseline

Price rail and public transport through operators before assessing a reseller bundle. A reseller can still offer useful payment or language support, but you need the official price and conditions for comparison.

Plan B when the budget breaks

If live quotes exceed your cap, change the route before cutting the contingency fund. Remove one city, reduce hotel moves or choose a room farther out on a direct line. Reprice the full journey after each change.

If an unexpected cost appears during travel, protect accommodation and the departure transfer first. Replace a paid activity with a museum, market or park that fits the weather. Keep enough money or card capacity for an airport taxi if the planned final service fails.

For a lost or blocked card, contact the issuer through a number saved offline. Carry a second payment method in another bag. Do not depend on one phone wallet.
