1. Confirm eSIM support

Look for an EID in the phone's device information or follow the manufacturer's instructions for your exact model and purchase country. A model name alone may not settle compatibility. Regional variants can differ.

2. Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked

An eSIM-capable phone can still reject another carrier's profile when your home network has locked it. Ask your carrier before travel. Do not assume paying off the device removed the lock.

3. Count available SIM slots

Decide whether you want your home number active at the same time. Dual-SIM behavior varies by phone. Some devices can store several eSIM profiles but run fewer lines at once.

4. Protect the installation information

Save the QR code or activation instructions somewhere you can reach without the new data line. Follow the provider's rules about when to install and when to switch on the line. Some providers start validity at installation, while others start it on first network use.

South Korea's major mobile carriers publish visitor products through SK Telecom, KT and LG U+. Buying from a network operator can provide a direct support route and, on some products, a Korean 010 number or voice options.

Carrier name alone does not tell you what the plan can do. One carrier may sell separate data-only and data-plus-voice products. Another plan may assign a number that receives calls but cannot place them until you add credit or complete identity checks.

Global travel eSIM

Travel eSIM companies sell regional or country data plans through an app or website. They can suit a traveler who wants to install before departure and use data after landing. Many route traffic through a roaming partner and do not include a Korean mobile number.

Compare the named underlying network, data amount, validity, speed reduction policy and refund rules. "5G" in marketing does not guarantee 5G at each location or on each device.

Choose a global plan by its country coverage, final price and terms. No field speed comparison underlies this guide; a carrier badge or a single speed test cannot establish which service will work best throughout your route.

Regional Asia eSIM

A regional plan can reduce setup work when Korea is one stop in a multi-country trip. Check whether Korea receives the same allowance and speed policy as the other countries. A large regional list can hide country-specific limits.

Home-carrier roaming

Roaming keeps your existing number and can remove the eSIM setup step. It may help with bank messages or account recovery, subject to your carrier's terms. Check the daily fee, data cap and call charges before departure.

You can also keep the home line active only for incoming messages while using a Korean data line. Turn off data roaming on the home line and select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Device menus vary, so follow the phone maker's current instructions.

Do you need a Korean phone number?

Many travelers can use maps, translation, messaging and web bookings with data alone. A Korean number becomes useful when:

• an accommodation or driver needs to reach you;
• a restaurant accepts a phone booking or local callback;
• a service sends a standard SMS to the assigned line.

Compare plans without getting trapped by the headline

Data and speed

Estimate how you will use the phone. Navigation, chat and light browsing need less data than video, cloud photo backup or tethering a laptop. Check whether "unlimited" means full speed for the whole period or a high-speed allowance followed by reduced speed.

Do not use one speed test as a national coverage claim. Building materials, crowds, device bands and location affect results.

Validity

Read whether a "day" means a calendar day, a 24-hour block or a provider-defined period. Confirm when the clock starts and whether extensions preserve the same profile.

Hotspot and tethering

Some plans permit a hotspot; others restrict it or count it under a separate cap. Confirm this in the product terms if you plan to work from a laptop or share data.

Support and recovery

Check how you can reach support without working mobile data. Save the help page, order number and airport counter locations. Some eSIM profiles cannot be downloaded again after deletion. Refunds

Setup before departure

1. Confirm unlock and eSIM compatibility.
2. Buy through the provider's official checkout or a reseller you have assessed.
3. Save the receipt, QR code and support details offline.
4. Follow the provider's installation timing.
5. Label the lines "Home" and "Korea."
6. Keep the Korea line off until the provider says activation should begin.
7. After landing, select the Korea line for mobile data and check the roaming setting specified by the provider.

Test it at ICN before leaving the terminal

Turn off airport Wi-Fi and load a fresh webpage. Search a route, send a message and check whether the phone shows the expected network. If the plan includes a number, find it in settings and test the promised call or SMS function.

Do not leave the support area after one icon appears. A signal indicator does not prove data, calls and texts all work.

Plan B if the eSIM does not connect

Reconnect to official airport Wi-Fi and reopen the provider instructions. Check that the travel line is enabled, selected for mobile data and using the required roaming setting. Restart the phone only if the provider recommends it.
